The Market Square in Białystok

The main square of Białystok is called Kościuszko Square. This is the heart of the city beating a lively rhythm created by hetman Jan Klemens Branicki. Buildings from that era still stand here today. The most important building at the Market Square is the Town Hall with a clock tower completed in 1761. The building was originally a place of trade, where merchants' stalls stood, mostly belonging to the Jewish population. In 1939 the Russians demolished the historic City Hall, but it was restored to its original condition in 1954-58. At present in the Town Hall in Białystok there is main headquarter of the Podlaskie Museum in Białystok. At the square is also located The Hetman's Armoury, a baroque-classical building in the shape of a typical 18th century noble manor. Currently there is here the State Archives in Białystok. A valuable monument in the market square of Białystok is the former Austeria, an inn currently occupied by the Astoria restaurant.  The entrance is supported by two columns. The most impressive is the western frontage of the Kościuszko Market Square, which is decorated with colorful facades of the tenement houses rebuilt after the war.  They hide a gallery and a favorite café of artists - Marszand.  Next to the floral elements, images of animals and figures of muses, it's visible here portraits of a merit people for Podlasie.  In the summer local painters sell their works in front of the tenement houses.
