Altar of Veit Stoss
The Altar of the Dormition of the Holy Virgin Mary is actually a retable of the main altar of St. Mary's Church. The retable is the largest statue in Europe and its height is about 2.8 meters. Figures, which are more than 200 in the altar are carved from solid lime blocks. The whole construction is made of oak wood, and the background is made of larch. The main scene of the altar is located in the central cabinet and depicts the Dormition of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The sleeping Mary is surrounded by apostles, and the figure of the Virgin Mary and St. James supporting her is cut from a single linden trunk. The open altar on movable wings illustrates the six Joys of Mary from the Annunciation to Pentecost. Conversely, when the cabinet is closed, the bas-reliefs depict 12 scenes from the lives of Mary and the Lord Jesus.
