Soli w Wieliczce
The Wieliczka Salt Mine
The Wieliczka Salt Mine was entered in the National Register of Historic Places in 1976. The Salt Mine is situated in the western part of the Subcarpathian salt deposits, the age of which is approx. 14 million years. These deposits were formed during the Miocene at the time when the Paratethys Sea began to disappear and became a closed sea with high salinity. The hot climate and the ever-lowering bottom have created favorable conditions for sedimentation. Due to the depth, very thick brine began to flow and salt and later calcium sulphates began to precipitate. Wieliczka mine has 9 levels, of which the first level is 64 meters deep and the last lies 327 meters below the surface.
